CEA: Controlled Environment Agriculture
CEA cultivates plants to control certain aspects of the environment to increase efficiency and sustainability. CEA is a process of creating a controlled environment for growing plants. This is sometimes called “vertical farming” or “indoor farming”. As their name suggests, these companies are isolated from the environment. Each plant is provided with different needs during their growth, including water, temperature, humidity, air quality, light and CO2.
In the CEA factory, you will find production under grow lights and hydroponic or aquaponic systems that provide water and nutrients. Fans, dehumidifiers, CO2 boosters and chillers are used to create the best growing climate.
These controlled indoor habitats make it possible to grow plants all year round. They are protected from any external pollution.
When you can eliminate the challenges of traditional agriculture, the implications for productivity, long-term energy savings and environmental impact are huge. There is no need for heavy machinery, no pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers, you will use very little water. The indoor system of CEA allows us to produce crops with 70-80% less water than is required for traditional outdoor cultivation.
